Education is at the foundation of our mission at
the Department of Surgery. Education activities of the faculty and
Department encompass our teaching of medical students and mentoring
of residents and fellows. We also serve as a resource for our colleagues
in the Greater Cincinnati region and other academic institutions.
Our faculty facilitate the discovery and scientific growth of our
research fellows, Ph.D. and Doctor of Science candidates. All faculty
members of the Department of Surgery are committed to our education
mission and find this component of their professional life to be
among the most rewarding.
Our surgical clerkship continues as a model
of innovation for clinical education. The improved didactic and
technical skills curriculum has led to a marked increase
in the number of medical students at the University of Cincinnati choosing
surgery as their career path. Complementing our clinical training experience are outstanding
opportunities to participate in basic science research in the Department
of Surgery, other basic science laboratories within the College
of Medicine, or extramural institutions. While research is optional,
most residents choose to spend one or two years in laboratory research
with a faculty mentor. Opportunities are available during this time
to pursue advanced degrees such as Ph.D. or Doctor of Science.
Surgical education programs in the Department of Surgery
at the University of Cincinnati have a proud tradition of being
among the premier programs in the country. We welcome your interest
in our education program. I invite you to learn more about our shared
vision of surgical education of the 21st century.
