The UC Surgeons Center for Surgical Weight Loss is a multidisciplinary team approach toward the treatment of morbid obesity.  This team approach involves a comprehensive evaluation by a bariatric surgeon, internists, dieticians and psychologists trained in caring for the morbidly obese patient.  Patients are followed postoperatively by their surgeons at standardized intervals over the first year and then yearly thereafter.  The aftercare program also includes postoperative dietary counseling and support groups.

The UC Surgeons Center for Surgical Weight Loss leads the region in both open and minimally invasive surgical weight loss procedures, including laparoscopic gastric bypass and the Lap-Band procedures.  Surgeons at The UC Center for Surgical Weight Loss have performed hundreds of successful gastric bypass and Lap-Band procedures since The Center opened in 2002.  Procedures are performed at University Hospital and The Christ Hospital, which has been designated a Center of Excellence by the ASMBS and The Surgical Review Corporation.  It is anticipated that approximately 300 procedures will be performed this year.  A one-year fellowship program funded by Ethicon Endosurgery is available for candidates desiring additional training in minimally invasive surgical procedures.
