Boyce Collaborates in Tissue Engineering Project

Steven T. Boyce, PhD, Research Professor and Director of the Skin Substitute Laboratories, Shriners Hospitals for Children - Cincinnati, is collaborating with the Cleveland Clinic's Clinical Tissue Engineering Center which recently received $4.9 million in funding to expand its network and programs in the areas of burn and scar care, wound healing and nerve repair. The Clinical Tissue Engineering Center was initially funded by the Ohio Third Frontier Program in 2004 with a plan to act as the hub of a network to bring scientists, tissue engineers, clinicians and private companies together to advance basic research findings to clinical practice. Fischer Selected for "Forty Under 40"

David R. Fischer, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery and Director of the Division of General Surgery, was named one of the Cincinnati Business Courier’s 2008 "Forty Under 40" recipients, which celebrates our community’s next generation of leaders and innovators. Competition for this year's program was intense, with nearly 250 applications. A twenty-member panel consisting of Forty Under 40 alumni made the selections. All 40 winners will receive recognition at a prestigious awards luncheon and celebration on Thursday, September 25, 2008, at the Millennium Hotel. Oral Surgery Residency News

Drs. Haithem Elhadi and Matt Pagnotto completed their Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency in June, 2008. Dr. Pagnotto has gone into private practice in Hebron, Kentucky, and will join the UC volunteer faculty. Dr. Elhadi is spending one year in General Surgery residency at UC.

Chief resident Dr. Dale Alto received the University Hospital "Catch the Spirit of Excellence" award recently for going beyond the call of duty to consult a patient who was a minor from Mexico with no parents or legal guardians in the U.S. This award shows proof of service excellence.

Dr. Likith Reddy recently left to accept a position at LSU as Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Robert Marciani, Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UC, has assumed the position as Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program.

Urology Division Holds Annual Residency Graduation and Honors Ceremony

The Division of Urology held its annual celebration of its graduating chief residents and presentation of awards on June 25, 2008, at Devou Park. Graduating chief residents were Drs. Gwen Roesel and Rebecca Roedersheimer. Dr. Gwen Roesel won the Scholar in Urology Award; Dr. Rebecca Roedersheimer won the Laparoscopic Achievement Award and the Director's Achievement Award; Dr. Sundeep Deorah won the Art Evans Award (given for excellence in urological research); and Dr. Eric Shreve won the Outstanding Achievement Award. Dr. Shrawan Gaitonde was a recipient of the Gold Foundation Humanism & Excellence in Teaching Award given by UC Medical Students.

Recent National and International Presentations

Thomas H. Inge, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics, Surgical Director of the Surgical Weight Loss Program for Teens, and Director of the Center for Bariatric Research and Innovation, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, was Invited Speaker and Panelist at the Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Panel, International Pediatric Endosurgical Group, Cannes, France, June 12, 2008.

Janice F. Rafferty, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief, Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery, presented “Is surveillance for recurrent anal cancer beneficial after complete tumor regression?” on the podium at the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons meeting in Boston, June 9, 2008.

 

Surgical Residency News

Jocelyn Logan-Collins, MD, won First Place in the Commission on Cancer Research national competition.  Dr. Logan-Collins will present at the annual meeting of the Commission on Cancer to be held in conjunction with the American College of Surgeons in San Francisco, October 2008.  She along with the Second and Third Place finalists will each receive a monetary award along with a travel stipend.  The Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care.

Surgical Handbook Available August 22
The sixth edition of the Mont Reid Surgical Handbook will go on sale Friday, Aug. 22. The handbook, which serves as a guide for efficient and effective management of common surgical problems, can be purchased at the Barnes & Noble and Amazon Web sites. Medical Students Publish Surgery Review Textbook

Former UC medical students Scott King and Jonathan Thompson, under the guidance of Amit D. Tevar, MD, recently published Deja Review: Surgery! by McGraw-Hill. This 300-page paperback book is from the perspectives of top students from their course exams and the USMLE Step 2. Scott King, MD, graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine where he worked on nationally recognized research projects. He also received the Golden Scalpel for Excellence in Dissection from UC. Dr. King spent his Preliminary Year in Internal Medicine at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati before moving to a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at University Hospital.

Jonathan Thompson, MD, matched to the UC Department of Surgery Residency Training Program. He was an honors student in surgery at the UC College of Medicine. He scored in the 99th percentile on Step 2 of the USMLE.

Amit D. Tevar, MD, is Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Transplantation and Director of Surgical Student Education at the University of Cincinnati. He has co-authored McGraw-Hill's Surgery Review Illustrated.

Cardiothoracic Surgery Division News

Cardiothoracic Residency Program:

The Cardiothoracic Residency Program recently graduated its second trainee, Jeffrey Garrett, MD. Dr. Garrett completed his general surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center before coming to UC to train in the cardiothoracic program. He has accepted a position at Oklahoma Cardiovascular Associates in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Lynn (Chip) Huffman, MD, who has just completed his general surgery residency at UC, began training in the cardiothoracic program on July 1, 2008. Dr. Huffman is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School. At the last annual meeting of the Society for Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Huffman and fellow resident Dr. Julian Guitron were named Candidate Members. In addition, Jay Asplan was named Associate Member as the STS Database Manager for UC.

The program recently matched Dana Alexander Booth, MD, who will begin his training at UC in July 2009. Dana is a graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin and is currently completing his general surgery residency at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Sandra Starnes, MD, was recently named the Associate Program Director for the Cardiothoracic Residency Program.

Thoracic Surgery:

The thoracic team recently published an article regarding the introduction of the thoracoscopic lobectomy for lung cancer into the residency training program at UC. The paper was researched, co-written and presented at the Western Thoracic Surgical Association by Mark Lucia, a medical student now entering his fourth year at UC who has been working with the division. Two UC medical students, Marihelen Otto and Christopher Arnos, are working with the cardiothoracic surgery team this summer as part of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Summer Internship Scholarship in Cardiothoracic Surgery. They will be observing clinical and surgical procedures as well as assisting with research and other activities in the division.

Plastic Surgery Division News

Chief Resident Graduation Weekend began with the Neale Invitational Golf Outing held on June 13, 2008, at Legendary Run Golf Course.  An informal dinner followed at the Cincinnati Country Club, hosted by Dr. John Kitzmiller.  Visiting Professor Kenneth Salyer, MD, presented "Be the Change You Want to Be" at Grand Rounds held on June 14, 2008, in the Surgical Amphitheater, followed by a reception in the Henry and Margaret Neale Conference Library.  The weekend ended with a Lobster Bake held at the home of Sarah and John Kitzmiller.
 
Lorelei Grunwaldt, MD, 2007-2008 Plastic Surgery Chief Resident, accepted a Fellowship in Pediatric Craniofacial Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.  Shannon O'Brien, MD, 2007-2008 Plastic Surgery Chief Resident, began private practice in Portland, Oregon. 

Two new residents were welcomed to the Division of Plastic Surgery: Scott Rapp, MD, began his intern year in the Integrated Plastic Surgery Program; Elizabeth Tran, MD, began her first of two years in the Independent Plastic Surgery Program.
 
W. John Kitzmiller, MD, completed the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Pathway to Leadership Program at a conference held in Chicago in July.
 
Drs. David Billmire and Kevin Yakuboff served as Course Directors for Reconstruction of Pediatric Burn Deformities at the American Burn Association Annual Meeting, April 30, 2008, in Chicago.

Vascular Surgery Division News

Joseph S. Giglia, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery, is now certified as a "Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation"  (RPVI). 

Amy B. Reed, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery and Director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship Training Program, won the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) 2008 Women’s Leadership Training Award this year at the Annual Vascular Meeting in San Diego, California. Dr. Reed also was elected Secretary of the Ohio Chapter, American College of Surgeons at the May 2008 meeting, and was named to a three-year term on the American Journal of Surgery editorial board in May 2008.

Patricia A. (Tish) Poe, RVT, Director of the Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory Services, was one of four newly appointed Fellows in the Society for Vascular Ultrasound.
