Division of Burn Surgery

University of Cincinnati: Burn Surgery

The Division of Burn Surgery provides high-quality innovative care for the treatment of burns in children and adults. Expert care from the burn and plastic/reconstructive surgeons makes the University Hospital Burn Center and the Shriners Burns Hospital Cincinnati a major referral center for burn victims in the Midwest.

The University Hospital Burn Center has full monitoring capabilities for adult patients. In addition, a Burn Walk-in Center is located on the unit for the evaluation of patients with minor acute burns and/or special needs such as toxic epidermal necrolysis, soft tissue necrosis, necrotizing skin and soft tissue infections, hidradenitis suppurativa, and isolated inhalation injury.

Cincinnati Surgery for Pediatric Burns

The Shriners Burns Hospital Cincinnati is a state-of-the-art pediatric burn care facility and a tertiary referral center. The hospital contains an organized, fully staffed and fully equipped outpatient clinic, three operating rooms, post-anesthesia care unit, and radiology facility. Patients are also offered an occupational and physical therapy gym, an in-house accredited school program and a six-unit family live-in facility.

The Division of Burn Surgery stimulates and sponsors research in burn prevention and treatment as well as rehabilitation, and provides leadership and education in the management of burn injuries and other skin and soft tissue disorders. The Shriners Burns Hospital Cincinnati Research Department had a total research budget of more than $3 million for the 2006-2007 academic year. Of special interest are the areas of immunology and sepsis, nutrition and metabolism, wound healing and skin coverage.

Dr. Richard Kagan ascended to the presidency of the American Burn Association in March 2007.  Dr. Kevin Bailey makes frequent presentations on burn prevention and treatment to fire departments in the region.
